Aurora borealis in Scotland
The aurora borealis is visible more often than you might expect in Scotland. I have selected a few images of the aurora from around North East Scotland all taken during solar cycle 24 which began on the 8th of January 2008. Solar activity is predicted to intensify right up until May 2013.
Unlike the extensive overhead displays often seen in high latitude countries like Alaska, Canada, Norway and Iceland. The aurora in mid-latitudes tends to be located on the northern horizon, and harder to see clearly with the naked eye. Larger geomagnetic storms do take place on occasion and on one occasion this solar cycle so far the aurora has been visible in Southern England.
